Valerie Schönjahn

Biography

Valerie has been invited to participate in the Minnawarra Art Awards (2021), and the Busselton Awards `Showcase´(2020) and is a finalist of the York Botanic Art Prize (2021). In 2021 she has created a temporary public art commission for the City of South Perth and undertook a residency with ART ON THE MOVE. Her work is part of the Sculptures at Bathers Beach (2022). She has been part of group exhibitions in both Melbourne and Perth, and her work is in the City of Melville Art Collection.

A project exploring new possibilities to documenting place in a spatial, immersive manner. Visual art practices interrogate materials and objects found on site to inspire a spatial response.

Artist Statement

Valerie is based in Walyalup, Fremantle. Working across a multitude of media, her practice is informed by her emotional and tactile landscape. Her background in architecture, a passion for space, material, domestic story telling and rituals underpin her artistic practice. Her more recent work has centred on exploring ideas of belonging and estrangement.
